Conscious Voices 21: Recycling in Columbus, Obama Organizers Get Out The Vote, and Howard Tibbs

An existential discussion outside the Clintonville Co-op; an Obama organizer talks about driving thousands of miles to support her candidate and be active in democracy; and a look at a green housing project.

Conscious Voices 20 - Homebrew, Obama Campaign, and the voices of Pirate
Reporter Michael Paull spends time with the homebrew club as they prepare for the national conference. Our music today is from Pirate, a band from 26th East Blake, Washington Beach.

Conscious Voices 19 - Solar ovens, alternative media and mime
Today in the studio we'll be talking to Tim Chavez, a solar oven fan who tells us what's cooking in his couch potato oven this summer. Jody Kushins explains new media, and why that's important in a progressive community, and mime artist David Crohn reflects on his electrifying stage life. Music is courtesy of Feveria and their album 'Past Time Reflections' on Jamendo.com. But first, a little word on chickens.

Websites to check out from the show are www.bluerockstation.com, solarcooking.com. Also mentioned are The Columbus Underground for alternative media, and the dance company HighJinks in Grandview.

Conscious Voices 18
Michael Dowd and his wife Connie Barlow travel the US in a giant van painted with a logo of the Jesus fish kissing the Darwin fish, under the caption "Thank God for Evolution." It's a descriptor of their marriage - he's born again, she's an atheist - and of his book, which celebrates evolution and the billions of years our tiny blue planet has been travelling around the sun. (www.thankgodforevolution.com)
Michael's talk at the Sustainability Now! conference hosted by Simply Living on May 1 is a hopeful and refreshing look at where we've come from, and what is therefore on the table in the next 250 years for humanity and other species. He's focused on building bridges, creating dialogue, and a context and language for us all to talk with each other about a collective future.
But first we hear from conference participant, Maureen Metcalf, who attended a session on the power of neighborhood organizing and green building standards. Later in the show, herbalist Anya Syrkin traces her path to wellness through herbs, and the blossoming of her own practice. She encourages us to use Ohio's native herbs for our own health and, well, just for the fun of it! After meeting her, I frittered a bagful of dandelion blossoms, and it's easily the most joyful meal my family had eaten for months.

Conscious Voices 15: Radical Simplicity and Flying Cars

Josh Benniston, Botany and Horticulture expert, talks to us about "Habitat Landscaping" including ecological home gardens, food spaces, entrance spaces, habitats for birds, landscapes that aren't toxic, and organic practices. Landscape can enhance the health of the family and the natural world, as an opportunity for children to learn, as well as a healing place to promote physical and psychological health.

Mr Benniston, helped organize the intensive Permaculture Design Course held at the United Methodist Children's Home, and encourages people to get involved with the Association for Regenaritve Culture, or to pick up a Permaculture Activist Magazine, or participate in the Earth Day event on April 26th, in Goodale Park. For more information on the Earth Day event go to: nowgetbusy.org

Or reach Benniston at 740-818-8422, or email him at: habitatsgarden@yahoo.comThis e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Scott Versluis, Vice President of Technology Development and Commercialization (Energy, Transportation and Environment Division) Battelle Laboratories, foresees the end of the lead-acid battery, the coming of a 'self-healing' tire, lightweight composites for auto bodies and even kicks around what it would take for a flying car.

Jim Merkel, author of Radical Simplicity, walks his talk. He points to the 24 acres footprint of the average American and challenges people to live on a 3 acre footprint. Merkel lives on a 3 acre ecological footprint even with a car, house, warmth, and food.

And finally we turn to a street saxophone player Mark Greene interviewed by Eugene Beer.

Conscious Voices 14 - So What IS Simply Living? and Lucey's Maze
Is your life in alignment with your values? People who want to live like that are attracted to Simply Living. Executive Director Marilyn Welker talks about how you can receive support in your values by taking part in the Earth Institute discussion groups and other Simply Living activies. If you're curious about the grass-roots organization which gave rise to WCRS, then this is the show for you!

At the AGM,
Becky and Dave Hohmann talk about how attending the discussion groups has supported their choices as a couple and as a family, and Sarah Straley gives the numbers of people who've taken the courses all over the world. If you're curious about Simply Living and looking for support to lead a value-oriented life, then attend the conference "Sustainability Now!" for the very reasonable price of $35 (includes breakfast and lunch - how awesome is that?) on May 16 and 17 at OSU. Conscious Voices 13 - CASA, travels in Nicaragua, and interpreting archetypes

Welcome to the Conscious Voices program. I'm your host Cynthia Rosi, and today we'll be hearing from the Development Director at CASA - Court Appointed Special Advocates - about this amazing volunteer opportunity, from Bob Studzinski who's been around the world recording indigenous people and their societies from behind the lens, and intuitive Jenny Seek talks about the archetypes in the Tarot, and how they can be used for personal growth.
Jeff Redfield heads up a very special volunteer program in Franklin County. The Court Appointed Special Advocates represent the child in court, and get to know the child through interviews and visits, so that their voices are heard. But this vital service is now under the gun. President Bush wants their VOCA funding for Homeland Security, and their Federal JAG funding is under threat. Even if you cannot donate your time as a CASA volunteer, writing to your Senator or Representative to insist that CASA gets its Federal JAG funding through HB5180 is a move that makes a difference. Visit the CASA website at http://www.casacolumbus.org/ to learn more.

Bob Studzinski speaks about his travels around the world, particularly Nicaragua which first captured his interest in the 1980s with its tremendous political foment. He journeyed there to check out the story behind the mainstream media's version of events, and tells a surprising tale of a tractor, a general, and an ice-cream truck.

Intuitive Jenny Seek interprets your dreams, and teaches how the tarot can be a tool for accessing your inner fears, as well as pointing up archetypes that may be predominant in your life. She can be reached for readings or for tarot teachings at 614-268-8951.

Conscious Voices 12 - the Democratic debate

Conscious Voices 11 - Obama speech, Muralist, OEFFA

Thank you to Jamendo.com for the creative commons piano music by Rob Costlow and his track "I Do."

But first, an update from Elisa Young who is fighting the construction of five coal power plants in Meigs County. As part of her campaign to educate the public about the destruction the plants will bring to the environment and the health of people living in Meigs, Elisa traveled to the Dover, Ohio area for a city council meeting and presented her concerns alongside AMP. Elisa made three presentations this wee, including one to Oberlin and another in Cleveland.

It's a true David and Goliath story, with Elisa fighting against the degradation of the county where her family has owned a farm since the American Revolution. If you'd like to help Elisa Young fight what is slated to become the largest concentration of coal-fired power plants in the US, please email her at elisayoung1@yahoo.com.

Conscious Voices 10 - Cost of Coal; poet Betty Bleen
We listen to the poignant story of Elisa Young, a woman who moved to the farm that had been in her family since the Revolutionary War only to find everything dying around her. She blames the four coal plants that encircle her - and talks about her fight to prevent new coal plants coming to the area.

We talk to the Ohio Consumer's Counsel about their views on one of the coal plants, and give you tips on what you can do to help.

Betty Bleen then explores her life in poetry, and we finish on musings about the superstition of breaking things in threes.

Diane Bunnel explores the religious hijacking of her only two children. Marine weapons inspector Scott Ritter told our government prior to the war there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq; Jeff Cohen talks about how the current administration primed us for war in Iraq through the media and is doing it again in Iran.

Thank you to Eugene Beer for additional recording assistance on the Ritter/Cohen interview.

Music graciously provided through jamendo.com and Allison Crowe. She's awesome! Go have a listen and download her for free, or put a donation in the tip jar.
